MRSI 505 Opens Eutectic Die Attach Lab Facility
Electronics manufacturers assembling microwave, optical, and RF modules, as well as other advanced packages requiring eutectic die attach processes, now have a resource for process development at MRSI headquarters in Chelmsford, Massachusetts. MRSI has opened a eutectic die attach lab facility and demonstration facility in the company's application engineering department, where customers will be able to test their products with the help of MRSI's engineering staff and dedicated equipment, including the MRSI 505E Assembly Work Cell. This flexible system supports direct gold/silicon eutectic and eutectic reflow using gold/tin and gold/germanium preforms. The system uses programmable closed loop temperature control, programmable up to 450 degree C., for eutectic bonding. The MRSI-505 is the industry leader for ultra precision die placement for epoxy die attach and eutectic bonding. Visitors to the facility will be able to investigate both the process of direct gold silicon eutectic die attach, as well as gold tin or gold germanium reflow, and other options. Dan Crowley, Vice President of Sales stated, "This laboratory is seen as great resource by our customers and makes MRSI unique in its commitment to the process."
Students From National Training Center Visit MRSI
Students attending a 3-day workshop on "Workmanship Standards for Hybrids, Microcircuits and RF/MMIC Modules" hosted by Sanders (A Lockheed Martin Company) in nearby Nashua, NH, visited MRSI this past April. They received a "first hand" look at MRSI's equipment, technology, and applications engineering facilities, including the industry standard model 505.
The workshop is held several times a year in various locations by the National Training Center for Microelectronics (Northampton Community College) in Bethlehem, PA. Mr. Tom Green, Training Director, is shown in the far right of the photo along with students from Sanders, JDSU Uniphase, and Draper Labs-all current MRSI 505 customers!
MRSI Group Expansion "On Schedule"
MRSI Group's planned move date into the new 65,000+ ft2 building is right on schedule for September 1st. Tremendous global growth along all of MRSI product lines has necessitated this expansion. According to Michael Chalsen, MRSI Vice President of Operations, "The new floor plan in manufacturing will support higher throughput flow manufacturing techniques enabling MRSI to produce more product in significantly less time. We are focusing both internally and externally to make this happen." He added that, "We designed the building with the customer in mind. Just off the main lobby, visitors can enter into a customer lounge area, which is adjacent to the 3,000+ ft2 demonstration, application, and system buyoff room. Customers will also have a dedicated office that includes internet and phone access in a private setting. A separate training room close to systems provides both a quiet setting and convenient hands-on demonstrations." The new facility is located at 101 Billerica Avenue, Bldg. 3, North Billerica, Massachusetts, on a site conveniently located just off of Route 495, 35 minutes north of Boston. It will also house MRSI subsidiary Automation Unlimited, a leading designer and manufacturer of automated point to point soldering systems.

MRSI 175 ENCore Encapsulation System Captures Vision Award
MRSI was awarded the coveted Vision Award in its category-"Best New Product Dispense Equipment For Advanced Packaging Technology"-for its MRSI 175 ENCore Encapsulation System. The award was presented at a special ceremony at the APEX Conference and Exhibition in Long Beach, California on March 13, 2000. The Vision Awards Competition recognizes significant advances in electronics packaging, materials, and assembly technology.
The heart of the MRSI-175 Encore is the patent pending Dual Chamber Linear Positive Displacement (LPD) Pump designed and built at MRSI. It is used where high accuracy and high speed point-of-use material delivery is required for applications such as IC encapsulation (BGA dam & fill, COB glob top and underfill). The uniquely designed dual chambers allows material to be dispensed continuously when required. In other words, dispensing and recharging occurs simultaneously-when one chamber is dispensing, the other is recharging. This process alternates between chambers resulting in "Zero Refill Time".
MRSI Helps Raise Money for Charity in Amkor's 3rd Habitat for Humanity Golf Tournament
On March 23rd and 24th, MRSI participated in Amkor's Business Briefing to Key Suppliers and Amkor's 3rd Habitat for Humanity Golf Tournament. Amkor Philippine's President, Tony Ng, was very happy to announce that the event raised over P 10M pesos, which would fund the building of approximately 100 homes for local families. MRSI's VP, Michael Chalsen, represented MRSI and reports, "Amkor's focus is very customer-driven and the company views its suppliers as part of its "family." They expect a lot from their vendor base, and they see high growth in the packaging industry as beneficial for all stakeholders."
